To that end, Naga Foundation promotes a simple and effective yet proven technique to rehabilitate desertified land. By simultaneously encouraging local economic activity around the re-greened land, Naga prompts a self-sustaining system that capitalizes on the emerging value of the re-greened land, balancing economic and ecological wealth on local, regional and international levels.
The consequences of desertification include:
Physical causes• Soil erosion• Changing rainfall• Intense rainfall when it does rain
Main human causes• Deforestation• Population growth• Overgrazing• Over cultivation
develops an additional source of funding to accelerate and expand to other affected areas,
fosters grassroots participation to effect behavorial, institutional and cultural change necessary to ensure a sustainable future, and
heightens the pressure on governments and organizations to take action.
Naga has realized several successful re-greening projects in the area and will now demonstrate its Climate Engineered Ecosystem Rehabilitation approach in a large-scale project in Kenya: the hydrological corridor from the Indian Ocean towards the Kilimanjaro hinterland. Here, a vast area of fertile land will be restored. This climate engineering method will restore the rainwater infiltration capacity of the soil and sub-surface water reservoirs. A patchwork of some 266 km² actively developed evergreen areas will extend restoration effects to an area of around 20.000 km² (1/2 the surface of The Netherlands). By simultaneously supporting the local communities in setting up and developing sustainable businesses on the re-greened lands, repeated overexertion of re-greened areas is avoided and a sustainable local economy is advanced.Visit our projects page
